ARTIST STATEMENT
I feel as though we are all players at the circus for degenerates and the leader or
conductor urges us deeper into the big top. Disguised like a clown on Ritalin the leader
jumps all around us as we slowly shuffle about. Our only job at the circus is to make sure
the trance of the music doesn't stop. Hipping and hopping with bleeding eyes he
succeeds at convincing us that his missing front teeth are actually there.
It is from this rabid circus aesthetic, that my latest sculpture has been born,
Carnival Attraction. This piece is the first in a series of sculpture that will encompass
this aesthetic, which will focus on each organ of the human reproductive system, male
and female.
Bubbling to the surface of my work is the symbiotic relationship between
structure and freedom. The curvilinear shapes of the foam become the freedom and yet
they remain attached to the straight lined structure of the foundation. An active force in
the work comes from the sculptures command of space as well as the contrast of organic
to machine-like elements as carved foam resonates soft and subtle next to hard, sharp
steel.
